Buying Diamond Jewelry as a Gift Without Asking

Buying Diamond Jewelry as a Gift Without Asking

If you cannot ask, borrow. Take a ring they already wear on the same finger, measure the inside diameter against a ruler, and match it to a size chart. That is the only home method that is reliably accurate, and it takes a minute.

Everything else on this page is about what to do when even that is not possible.

Finding a ring size without asking

  • Borrow a ring. It must be one worn on the same finger of the same hand — the two hands are rarely the same size. Measure straight across the inside of the band in millimetres and read it off the ring size chart.
  • Ask someone who would know. A sibling or close friend can often ask in passing without it meaning anything.
  • Do not guess from glove size or height. There is no reliable relationship, and a guess is more likely to be wrong than right.

Two things make this higher-stakes at Shop QSE than elsewhere: we make whole US sizes 6 to 10 with no half sizes, and rings are not resized after purchase. If the size is wrong we exchange it, but custom and engraved rings cannot be returned at all.

What to buy when you cannot be sure

Piece Sizing risk
Stud earrings None. There is no size to get wrong, which is why studs are the safest diamond gift.
Pendants Very low. Chain length is a preference rather than a fit.
Tennis bracelets Moderate. Six lengths, and a wrist is easier to estimate than a finger.
Rings High. Whole sizes only and no resizing.

If it is a proposal

Size matters less than you think on the day and more than you think afterwards. A ring that is slightly loose still goes on. One that will not pass the knuckle cannot be worn at all, so if you are choosing between two sizes, take the larger.

Before you order

Choose a ready-to-ship design rather than custom if there is any doubt. Ready-to-ship pieces are covered by the standard 30-day return policy and dispatch within 24 hours; custom and engraved pieces are excluded from returns and take 15 to 18 business days. The flexibility is worth more than the personalization if you are not certain.

Common questions

How can I find out someone's ring size without asking?

Borrow a ring they already wear on the same finger of the same hand, lay it on a ruler and measure straight across the inside of the band in millimetres. Match that to a ring size chart. A ring worn on a different finger will not give the right answer.

What is the safest diamond gift if I do not know their size?

Stud earrings. There is no size to get wrong. Pendants are the next safest, because chain length is a preference rather than a fit.

What if I buy the wrong ring size?

We exchange the ring for the correct size, subject to our exchange policy. Rings are not resized after purchase. Custom and engraved rings cannot be returned at all, so choose a ready-to-ship design if you are unsure.

Should I size up or down if I am guessing?

Up. A ring slightly too large can still be worn; one that will not pass the knuckle cannot. We make whole sizes only, so anyone measuring at a half size should round up.

Can I guess a ring size from glove size or height?

No. There is no reliable relationship between either and finger size. Borrow a ring instead, or ask someone close to them.
