Ring Size Chart

The most common ring size is 6 to 7 for women and 9 to 10 for men, but an average is not a measurement. To find your own size, measure the inside diameter of a ring that already fits and read it off the chart below, or measure your finger with a strip of paper. Shop QSE rings are made in US sizes 6 to 10.

Ring sizes we make

Every Shop QSE ring is made in five whole US sizes. We do not stock half sizes, so if you measure at a half size, order the next size up.

US size Inside diameter Inside circumference Circumference (inches)
6 16.5 mm 51.9 mm 2.04"
7 17.3 mm 54.4 mm 2.14"
8 18.1 mm 57.0 mm 2.24"
9 18.9 mm 59.5 mm 2.34"
10 19.8 mm 62.1 mm 2.44"

What a ring size actually measures

A ring size is a measurement of the band, not of your finger directly. The US scale describes the inside diameter of the ring — the distance straight across the hole — and each whole size adds roughly 0.8 mm to it. The European scale describes the inside circumference instead, which is why European sizes look like much larger numbers for the same ring.

This is worth knowing because the two home methods below measure different things. Measuring a ring you own gives you a diameter. Measuring your finger gives you a circumference. Both appear in the charts on this page, so either will lead you to the right size.

How to measure your ring size at home

Two methods work without any special equipment. The second is the more reliable of the two, because a solid ring cannot stretch.

Method 1 — measure your finger

  1. Cut a strip of paper about 5 mm wide, or take a length of non-stretch string.
  2. Wrap it around the base of the finger, snug against the skin but not pressing in.
  3. Mark where the strip overlaps itself.
  4. Lay it flat against a ruler and read the length in millimetres.

That figure is your finger circumference. Measure three times and use the largest reading — paper stretches slightly and string sags, and both errors make the ring come out too small.

Method 2 — measure a ring that fits

  1. Choose a ring worn on the same finger of the same hand.
  2. Lay it flat on a ruler marked in millimetres.
  3. Measure straight across the inside of the band, from inner edge to inner edge.

That figure is the inside diameter. Match it to the diameter column in the chart above.

International ring size conversion

Ring sizes are numbered differently in each market. The European number is the inside circumference in millimetres, which is why it matches the last column. Sizes marked ✓ are the ones we make.

If you are between two sizes

Order the larger size. This matters more at Shop QSE than at a jeweller who resizes, because we make whole sizes only and we do not resize rings after purchase. A ring that is slightly loose can be worn, and sits comfortably in cold weather when fingers shrink. A ring that is slightly tight will not pass the knuckle, which makes it unwearable rather than merely imperfect.

If you measure at 6.5, order a 7. If you measure at 8.5, order a 9.

When to size up

  • Wide bands. A band wider than about 6 mm covers more of the finger and feels tighter at the same size. Add a quarter to a half size, which for our range means the next whole size.
  • Larger knuckles. If the knuckle is noticeably wider than the base of the finger, size to clear the knuckle and accept a little movement at the base.
  • Cold hands. Fingers can change by close to a full size between a cold morning and a warm evening. Measure warm.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring first thing in the morning, or with cold hands, when fingers are at their smallest.
  • Pulling the paper strip tight instead of resting it against the skin.
  • Using a ring worn on a different finger — the two are rarely the same size.
  • Guessing a partner's size from their glove size or their height. Borrow a ring instead.

If the size is wrong

Rings are not resized after purchase. Each ring is made and finished to its stated size, and altering the band would affect the setting and the certification of the stones.

Please use the chart above before ordering. If the size turns out to be wrong, we can exchange the ring for the correct size, subject to our exchange policy. Custom and engraved rings are made for you and cannot be returned, so take particular care with sizing before ordering one.

Common questions

What is the average ring size?

In the United States the most common ring size is 6 to 7 for women and 9 to 10 for men. Those are averages, not predictions — measure before you order.

What ring sizes does Shop QSE make?

Our rings are made in US sizes 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. We do not currently stock half sizes.

How do I measure my ring size without a ring sizer?

Wrap a strip of paper or a length of string around the base of your finger, mark where it overlaps, lay it flat against a ruler and read the length in millimetres. That length is your finger circumference — match it to the chart above.

How do I measure my ring size using a ring I already own?

Lay the ring on a ruler and measure straight across the inside of the band, from inner edge to inner edge. That figure is the inside diameter in millimetres, which the chart converts to a US size.

I am between two ring sizes. Which should I order?

Order the larger of the two. A ring slightly too large can still be worn and sits comfortably; one slightly too small will not pass the knuckle at all. Because we make whole sizes only, anyone who measures at a half size should round up.

Should I size up for a wide band?

Yes. A wide band covers more of the finger and feels tighter than a thin one at the same size. Add a quarter to a half size for bands wider than about 6 mm.

Does finger size change during the day?

Yes. Fingers swell in heat, after exercise and late in the day, and shrink when cold. Measure at the end of a normal day at room temperature, when your hands are at their largest.

How can I find out someone's ring size without asking?

Borrow a ring they already wear on the same finger and measure its inside diameter against the chart above. A ring worn on a different finger will not give the right answer.

What if my knuckle is larger than the base of my finger?

Measure both the knuckle and the base and choose a size between the two. The ring has to pass the knuckle, but it should not spin freely once it is on.

Can a Shop QSE ring be resized after purchase?

No. Rings are not resized after purchase. If the size is wrong we can exchange the ring for the correct size, subject to our exchange policy. Custom and engraved rings are made for you and cannot be returned, so measure carefully before ordering one.
