A halo setting rings one center stone with smaller diamonds; a cluster arranges several stones as a single shape. Both make an earring read larger than its total carat weight, and both are cheaper than a solitaire stud below about 1 carat and dearer above 1.50 carat. Shop QSE carries 27 halo and cluster designs in solid gold, from $229 to $2,600.
That crossover is the whole decision, and almost nobody explains it, so here are the numbers.
Halo against solitaire, at the same carat weight
Every figure below is a live Shop QSE price for the pair in solid 14K gold, every stone IGI certified at E-F color and VS1-VS2 clarity. The solitaire column is our published stud ladder.
| Total carat weight | Solitaire stud pair | Halo or cluster, from | Which costs less |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.50 carat | $399 | $229 | Halo, by $170 |
| 1 carat | $532 | $349 | Halo, by $183 |
| 1.50 carat | $769 | $980 | Solitaire, by $211 |
| 2 carat | $975 | $1,458 | Solitaire, by $483 |
| 3 carat | $1,470 | $2,545 | Solitaire, by $1,075 |
Why the direction reverses
Two costs pull against each other. Diamond price per carat rises steeply with stone size, so splitting a carat into one center stone and twenty small ones buys the same total weight far more cheaply than a single large stone. That is why the halo wins at 0.50 and 1 carat.
Setting labor runs the other way. A halo has twenty-odd individual seats to cut and twenty-odd stones to set, against two for a pair of solitaires, and that labor is the same whether the stones are small or large. By 1.50 carat the labor outweighs the stone saving, and from there the gap widens with every step up.
So the honest rule: below a carat, a halo or cluster gets you more apparent size for less money. Above 1.50 carat, you are paying a premium for the look, not saving on the stone.
Halo or cluster ā they are not the same thing
| Halo | Cluster | |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | One clear center stone with a ring of smaller stones around it | Several stones of similar size arranged as one shape |
| Reads as | A larger solitaire | A flower, a triangle, a shaped motif |
| Choose it when | You want the look of a bigger single diamond | You want width and movement, and do not need a center stone |
| Shop QSE range | Round, oval, princess and channel-set halos from $229 | Flower, marquise flower, floral and triangle clusters from $349 |
A few designs do both ā the 0.50 carat round cluster halo at $229 and the 1 carat teardrop halo cluster at $349 both ring a center stone and arrange the surround as a shape.
What to watch with a halo
Three things, and they are the reason some people go back to solitaires.
More settings means more places for a stone to come loose. Twenty small stones held by small prongs need checking more often than two large ones. Look at the earring under a light every few months and take it in if a stone looks dull ā a loose stone usually dulls before it falls out, because dirt gets under it.
Small stones hide dirt. The gaps between a halo's stones collect skin oil and soap film faster than an open solitaire setting, and that film is what makes a halo look flat. Warm water, a drop of dish soap and a soft brush worked around the surround fixes it. Our guide to cleaning lab grown diamond jewelry at home has the full method.
The center stone grade matters more than the surround. The surrounding stones are small enough that their color and clarity are hard to read by eye. The center stone is not. Every Shop QSE diamond is IGI certified at E-F color and VS1-VS2 clarity throughout, surround included, but if you are comparing sellers, ask which grades apply to which stones.
Which weights are worth it
- 0.50 carat, $229. The best value in the range on apparent size per dollar. Reads as a stud a size up.
- 1 carat, $349 to $1,070. The widest choice. The gap between the cheapest and dearest here is setting complexity, not diamond quality.
- 1.50 carat, $980 to $1,900. The crossover. Compare against a $769 solitaire pair and decide whether the look is worth the difference.
- 2 to 3 carat, $1,458 to $2,600. Occasion pieces. At this weight a solitaire is both cheaper and simpler to look after.

Common questions
Do halo earrings look bigger than studs?
Yes. A ring of smaller stones adds width, so a halo reads larger than a solitaire stud of the same total carat weight. That is the whole purpose of the setting.
Are halo earrings cheaper than solitaire studs?
Below about 1 carat, yes. A 0.50 carat halo pair is $229 against $399 for a 0.50 carat solitaire pair, because small stones cost far less per carat than one large one. Above 1.50 carat it reverses, because the setting labor on twenty stones outweighs the stone saving.
What is the difference between a halo and a cluster earring?
A halo has one clear center stone with a ring of smaller stones around it and reads as a larger solitaire. A cluster arranges several stones of similar size as one shape ā a flower, a triangle ā with no single center stone.
How much are 1 carat diamond cluster earrings?
Shop QSE 1 carat halo and cluster earrings run from $349 to $1,070 a pair in solid 14K gold. The spread is setting complexity; every stone is IGI certified at E-F color and VS1-VS2 clarity.
Do halo earrings lose stones?
They have more stones and more prongs than a solitaire, so they need checking more often. A loose stone usually dulls before it falls out, because dirt collects under it, so a stone that looks flat under a light is worth having checked.
Are halo earrings harder to clean?
Slightly. The gaps between the surrounding stones collect skin oil and soap film faster than an open solitaire setting. Warm water, a drop of dish soap and a soft brush worked around the surround is enough.
